Growth Form

Plants can be classified by their life form or growth form. The Raunkiær system provides an easily accessible approach and is still widely used.

Giant tree
Very tall or very large, usually fast growing trees, including many conifers, that can reach a height of 40 m (130 ft) or more. Some grow around 100 m (330 ft) tall. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Large tree
Tall or large, usually fast growing trees, including many conifers, that can reach a height of 30 m (100 ft) or more. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Medium tree
Moderately large trees that can reach a height of 15 m (50 ft) or more. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Small tree
Small trees that usually do not reach more than 15 m (50 ft) tall. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Palmlike tree
A tree with a single or sparsely branching main trunk and a rosette-shaped crown. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Bamboo
A grass with tree-like proportions. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Herbaceous tree
Plants in the banana family with pseudostems that are formed by densely packed leafbases to have the function and look of a trunk. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Shrub
A small, usually woody plant with well branched stems. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Climber
A plant with stems that use other plants or cliffs as support. A phanerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Subshrub
A dwarf shrub, at least partially woody. A chamaephyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Creeper
A plant with elongate stems that are growing along the ground. A hemicryptophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Perennial
A herbaceous plant with buds near the soil surface. A hemicryptophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Perennial rosette plant
A herbaceous plant that forms a rosette of leaves at the soil surface. A hemicryptophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Deciduous Perennial
A plant growing from an underground bulb, rhizome or corm. Dryland or temperate climate species in this group are usually completely deciduous while species from humid, tropical climates replace deciduous shoots continuously with new growth. A geophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Perennial marsh plant
A plant that grows on swampy, marshy ground. A helophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Perennial water plant
A plant that grows fully or partially submerged under water. A hydrophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Annual
A plant with a short life cycle that usually is completed in only a few months. These plants survive an unfavorable season in the form of seeds. A therophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Epiphyte
A plant that lives without soil, attached to trees, cliffs or the like, but not a parasite. An aerophyte or epiphyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.

Succulent
A dryland plant that can store water in its leaves, stems or roots. A xerophyte in Raunkiær's life-form classification.
